Once we get a buyer on a forty-five-minute call and walk them through how our product works, their eyes light up. We just need more people to understand what we do.”

So you spend your money trying to explain yourself. You put a two-minute explainer video at the top of your website. You write long pages about your features. You train your sales team to show every button on the screen so the buyer finally “gets it.”

And still, people walk away without buying.

I have to tell you a hard truth about how human brains work: people do not buy when they understand you. People buy when they feel understood.

Trying to make a busy, tired human being understand how your company works is like asking a stranger at a dinner party to read your resume. Their brain tunes out before they finish the first line.

If you want to see how this really works—how positioning, human nature, and marketing fit together—stop looking at software companies for a minute and look at Nike.

For forty years, business bosses have been trying to copy Nike. And for forty years, they have been stealing the exact wrong thing.

The Shoe Trap

Most leaders look at Nike, see the three most famous words in business—Just Do It—and think, “What a clever slogan. We need to hire a writer to give us three magic words like that.”

They miss the whole trick. Just Do It is not Nike’s position. It is just the paint on the outside wall.

To see what Nike actually built, you have to go back to 1987.

Back then, Nike was in big trouble. A rival company, Reebok, had blown right past them to become the number one shoe company in America. Nike sales were dropping, and they were laying people off.

Why was Reebok winning? Because the 1980s fitness craze had moved into dance studios, and Reebok was selling a soft, comfortable shoe for aerobics.

All of Reebok’s ads talked about the shoe. They talked about how soft the leather was, how bright the colours were, and how good the shoe felt on a gym floor. Reebok was working hard to make people understand their product.

For a little while, Nike panicked and tried to fight back the same way. They ran ads showing the plastic air bubble in the heel of their shoes, explaining the science of how their rubber cushioned your foot. They were begging buyers to understand their factory.

Nobody cared.

Then Nike stopped looking at the shoe and started looking at the human being wearing it.

The Six O’Clock Fight Inside Your Head

If you study how the human mind works, you learn pretty quickly that our brains are built to keep us safe and comfortable.

Your brain hates burning extra energy, and it hates pain. Whenever you try to do something hard, a quiet voice inside your head immediately starts making excuses to keep you on the couch.

Nike looked at people who exercise and noticed a simple truth that nobody else in the shoe business was talking about. They realized that the hardest part of a run never happens on a sunny track in front of cheering crowds.

The real fight happens at 6:00 AM on a freezing, dark Tuesday morning. It happens in the three feet of space between your warm bed and the cold wooden floor.

Whether you are an Olympic gold medalist or a tired parent trying to lose ten pounds, you hear the exact same voice in your head when the alarm goes off: Stay under the blanket. Your knees hurt from yesterday. It’s raining outside. Nobody will know if you skip today.

That voice is internal resistance. Every single human being on earth fights it. Nike asked a simple question: What happens to a person on the other side of that fight?

When you hear that lazy voice telling you to quit, and you swing your legs out of the warm bed anyway, tie your laces, and step out into the cold rain—who do you become?

Even if you jog slower than a turtle, the moment you push through that wall in your head, you no longer feel like a tired office worker.

You feel like an Athlete.

The Word vs. The Slogan

Stop right there and look at what Nike uncovered. They didn’t invent a new way to glue rubber to foam. They found the exact transformation a customer experiences after using their product.

When you put on Nike and push through the doubt in your head, you transform into an athlete.

Look at how all the pieces lock together once you know that truth:

The Human Truth: Every person fights the voice in their head that tells them to take the easy way out.

The Position: Athlete. Notice that this word is a noun, and it is not about Nike. It is not Air, Foam, or Footwear. It is the person the customer becomes.

The Marketing Expression: Just Do It.

Why did Just Do It become the most powerful line in history?

Because those three words are not Nike talking to you about their company. Those are the exact three words an athlete says to themselves at 6:00 AM to shut up the lazy voice in their own head!

When a runner saw a Nike ad in 1988, their brain didn’t say, “Oh, I finally understand how Nike builds shoes.”

Their brain dropped its guard and said, “These people know what goes on inside my head when nobody is watching. They get me.”

Once a buyer feels like you understand their quietest fight—and that your product turns them into the person they want to be—you never have to beg them to buy the shoe. Athletes wear Nike. If you feel like an athlete, buying the shoe is just how you vote for who you are.

Loud Inside the Building, Quiet Outside the Door

Now, here is the part where almost every CEO I meet messes this up. When a boss finally figures out who their customer becomes after using their product, their first instinct is to run outside and shout that word on a megaphone.

If a normal B2B company ran Nike, their homepage would say: “We Are The Athlete Transformation Platform! Our Mission Is To Make You Feel Like An Athlete!”

If Nike did that, you would roll your eyes and walk away.

Why? Because the human brain hates being told what to feel.

Think about going to a party. If a guy walks up to you, shakes your hand, and says, “Hi, I am hilarious,” do you think he is funny? No. You think he is a weirdo. If he wants you to think he is funny, he can never say the word funny out loud. He just has to tell a joke that makes you laugh.

Positioning works the exact same way. The moment you walk out your front door and brag, “We own this word!”, you break the spell.

To build real gravity, you have to follow a strict rule: Your position must be loud and explicit inside your building, and quiet and implicit outside your door.

Look at how Nike lived this rule for decades:

1. Loud Inside the Building

Inside Nike’s walls, the word Athlete was written in stone. Co-founder Bill Bowerman gave every employee a filter so simple a ten-year-old could use it: “If you have a body, you are an athlete.”

Inside the company, nobody guessed who they were building for. That one word decided who they hired, how they designed products, and where they spent their money. When Nike employees walked around campus, they looked at statues and banners of athletes who pushed through pain. The word was spoken out loud in every room so the team never drifted.

2. Quiet Outside the Door

When Nike walked out the front door to make commercials and posters, they didn’t talk about themselves at all. And they didn’t lecture you on what an athlete is.

Instead, they just showed the fight.

They showed an eighty-year-old man jogging across a bridge with his shirt off in the morning fog. They showed a basketball player in a wheelchair grinding up a steep hill until his arms shook. They showed Michael Jordan talking about all the games he lost and all the winning shots he missed.

In many of their best commercials, you don’t even see a sneaker for the whole sixty seconds. You don’t hear a single word about arch support. At the very end, you just see Just Do It and a tiny check mark.

Because Nike kept the rule loud inside the building, they didn’t need to brag outside the door. They just held up a mirror to the buyer’s hardest moment and let the buyer feel the transformation in their own chest.

What Happens When You Forget Who They Become

You can even see what happens when a giant like Nike breaks this rule. A few years ago, Nike hired a new boss who came from the software and consulting world. He looked at Nike through a spreadsheet.

Inside the building, they stopped obsessing over the runner fighting to get out of bed. They fired the people who understood specific sports, cut ties with local running stores, and started chasing easy online money by pumping out endless colours of old-fashioned sneakers.

They stopped treating their buyers like athletes and started treating them like shoppers.

Buyers couldn’t see Nike’s internal spreadsheets, but they felt the shift right away. The magic vanished. Upstart running brands swooped in and stole the real runners, and tens of billions of dollars in company value disappeared—until Nike admitted the mistake and brought back a leader who started there as an intern thirty years ago to put Athlete back at the center of the building.

Unpacking Your Company

Now let’s close the book on Nike and look at your business today. Most companies have the inside-outside rule completely backwards:

Inside your building, everything is quiet and blurry. If I pull five of your leaders into five separate rooms and ask, “Who does our buyer become a year after using our product?”, I will get five completely different answers. And four of them will just describe what your software does.

Outside your door, you are shouting about your shoes. Your website, your sales deck, and your LinkedIn posts are screaming about your features, your speed, and your AI—begging the buyer to understand how smart you are.

Your buyer doesn’t care about the plastic bubble in the heel of your shoe.

Your buyer has their own 6:00 AM fight. Every Monday morning, they sit at their desk with a knot in their stomach. Maybe they feel like a tired firefighter putting out the same messes all day while their boss asks why nothing is moving forward. Maybe they are terrified of making a mistake that makes them look foolish in the next board meeting.

When they use your product for a year, and that mess finally clears up, who do they become? Do they turn from a stressed-out firefighter into a calm judge? Do they turn from an order-taker into a leader the boss actually listens to?

Before you write another word of marketing, and before you make another slide trying to help buyers “understand what we do,” sit down with your team and do two things:

First, name the person your customer becomes when they push through their hardest fight with your help. Write that single noun on the wall inside your building. Use it to decide what you build, who you hire, and what easy money you say no to.

Second, never brag about that word outside the door. Stop talking about your machine. Instead, use your marketing to show the buyer that you know exactly what their 6:00 AM fight feels like.

Once they feel understood by you, you won’t have to explain how your shoes are made. They will already be tying the laces.

When we sit down to look at why your growth is stalling, you almost always tell me the same thing.
