{"id":90013,"date":"2025-04-15T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paulsyng.com\/blog\/?p=90013"},"modified":"2025-04-15T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:00:00","slug":"every-300m-deal-i-ve-helped-win-had-the-same-hidden-variable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulsyng.com\/blog\/every-300m-deal-i-ve-helped-win-had-the-same-hidden-variable\/","title":{"rendered":"Every $300M deal I\u2019ve helped win had the same hidden variable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u265b<br \/> 15.04.2025<\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong>Every $300M deal I\u2019ve helped win had the same hidden variable.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Read Time: 5\u00a0Minutes<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/paulsyng.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/d1b346fb-13c6-3f07-2ba9-2024656f0bc7.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Hello<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>(There&#8217;s a special announcement and gift below.)<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Every $300M deal I\u2019ve helped win had the same hidden variable.<\/p>\n<p>And every time we ignored it, the room went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Not out of interest but out of distance.<\/p>\n<p>For six years, I worked inside a Big Four consulting firm on the most significant and complex transformation deals the firm pursued.<\/p>\n<p>Some were RFPs and others, career-defining bets.<\/p>\n<p>Multi-million-dollar pursuits with global stakeholders, long sales cycles, and real reputational risk.<\/p>\n<p>The teams I worked with were brilliant.<br \/> But brilliance alone didn\u2019t win.<\/p>\n<p>Not when the room was full of C-level decision-makers, each scanning for risk, not features.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I started to notice.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d walk in ready to lead with:<\/p>\n<p>Credentials<br \/> Capabilities<br \/> Global scale<br \/> Technical depth<\/p>\n<p>But the buyer was asking:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill this reduce risk fast enough?\u201d<br \/> \u201cWill this make my next board meeting easier?\u201d<br \/> \u201cWill this fail quietly, or succeed loudly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a language mismatch.<br \/> Not in translation, but in worldview.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s where I came in.<\/p>\n<p>My role was to reframe the narrative.<\/p>\n<p>To work with the pursuit team.<\/p>\n<p>Lead client service partners, pursuit managers, SMEs, writers and designers, etc, to help them shift from:<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udeab \u201cHere\u2019s what we do\u201d<br \/> \u2705 \u201cHere\u2019s what you gain\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udeab \u201cHere\u2019s our approach\u201d<br \/> \u2705 \u201cHere\u2019s your avoided risk\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udeab \u201cHere\u2019s our value prop\u201d<br \/> \u2705 \u201cHere\u2019s what changes for you\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t copywriting.\u00a0<br \/> It was cognitive alignment.<\/p>\n<p>We weren\u2019t just making the message clearer.<br \/> We were making it feel familiar, like something the buyer already believed.<\/p>\n<p>I remember one deal in particular.<\/p>\n<p>The pursuit team had rehearsed the pitch ten times.<br \/> It was flawless on paper.<\/p>\n<p>But the first dry run with senior leadership fell flat.<\/p>\n<p>The feedback?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s impressive. But I don\u2019t see myself in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the clue.<\/p>\n<p>We restructured the entire story around the buyer\u2019s actual priorities:<\/p>\n<p>Their transformation pressure.\u00a0<br \/> Their industry dynamics.\u00a0<br \/> Their political realities.<\/p>\n<p>We dropped 40% of the original slides.<br \/> Replaced every \u201cwe\u201d with \u201cyou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And led with risk reframed as clarity.<\/p>\n<p>When we presented it again, the CFO leaned in before slide three.<\/p>\n<p>The CEO didn\u2019t just nod.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He started paraphrasing our words as his own.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Not because of what we said.<\/p>\n<p>But because of how they felt:<br \/> Understood. Seen.
