{"id":2717,"date":"2025-05-08T10:52:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T14:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paulsyng.com\/blog\/?p=2717"},"modified":"2025-05-08T11:08:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T15:08:05","slug":"when-you-sell-a-product-without-position","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulsyng.com\/blog\/when-you-sell-a-product-without-position\/","title":{"rendered":"When you sell a product without position"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Someone asked, &#8220;What do you sell, if you are not selling value, features and all that you listed there?&#8221; in response to the following post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embed\/feed\/update\/urn:li:share:7325373758431473664\" height=\"832\" width=\"504\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" title=\"Embedded post\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And that&#8217;s an excellent question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a common one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it feels like if you&#8217;re not selling value, features, benefits, or outcomes\u2026 then what\u2019s left?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"When you sell a product without a position\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rkTOYiY_4e8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s change our angle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t sell something.<br>You sell somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Features live in the product.<br>Benefits live in the pitch.<br>Value lives in the spreadsheet.<br>But Position lives in the mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you sell without a position, you\u2019re selling from the outside in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re trying to convince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you sell with a position, you&#8217;re selling from the inside out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re becoming obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what do you sell with a position?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You sell meaning.<br>You sell membership.<br>You sell a mental shortcut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You sell a decision that makes the buyer feel smarter, safer, and more complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re not selling a hammer.<br>You&#8217;re selling the belief that &#8220;I build things.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re not selling a luxury watch.<br>You&#8217;re selling the identity of &#8220;I am timeless.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re not selling a product.<br>You&#8217;re selling a place in the customer\u2019s self-concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Positioning is the lens through which everything else becomes desirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes your features valuable.<br>It makes your benefits compelling.<br>It makes your outcomes believable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because people don\u2019t buy features.<br>They don\u2019t even buy results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They buy the story they get to tell themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why companies with weak positioning have to talk about value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because there&#8217;s no meaning doing the heavy lifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur car goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>vs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not just buying speed. You\u2019re buying who you are when no one\u2019s watching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One is information.<br>The other is identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you&#8217;re not selling features, benefits, or outcomes\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re selling the mental territory your brand owns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A noun, not an adjective.<br>A place, not a pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when you own that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything else sells itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want to test this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask your customer: \u201cWhat do we mean to you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they say \u201cgreat service\u201d or \u201cfast delivery,\u201d you\u2019re a vendor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they say \u201cconfidence\u201d or \u201ccontrol\u201d or \u201cfreedom,\u201d you\u2019re positioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that changes everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator alignwide has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ready to Own Your Mental Territory?
