To set the record straight and avoid the ire of fitness elite, I do <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Crossfit<\/em><\/strong> on alternate days of the week.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e14a\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">(Spoiler: Completing x-days has never been and never was the objective. It happens to be a point of reflection.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"ef87\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Only on retrospection, I realised the life-changing impact my coach (personal trainer) had made, which got me typing up this essay in an effort to share my journey of <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">messy to sassy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"0caf\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\">By any stretch of imagination \u2014 <em class=\"markup--em markup--h4-em\">if<\/em> \u2014 in the process, this <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--h4-em\">1000 word circuit<\/em><\/strong> motivates one more person, triggering a domino effect, I would brandish it a victory.<\/h4>\n<p id=\"5afa\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\" style=\"text-align: left;\">With that said, I believe you can\u2019t convince someone into habitual training and fitness. Motivation for choosing a healthier path has to come from a voice within. For others, like myself, who can\u2019t take a hint, having one\u2019s body punch them in the face is reason enough.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"cb15\" class=\"graf--h3 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">Black-eye later.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"aa5c\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h3\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The calling card came early 2015 disguised in shoulder and neck pain. A consequence of long hours at my desk doing client work I no longer enjoyed and the lack of inertia-destabilising physical activity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"58c0\" class=\"graf--figure graf--layoutOutsetLeft graf-after--p\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*Yl2B32TZSQ5YACwJ0I4_2A.jpeg\" data-width=\"540\" data-height=\"960\" data-action=\"zoom\" data-action-value=\"1*Yl2B32TZSQ5YACwJ0I4_2A.jpeg\" data-scroll=\"native\"><canvas class=\"progressiveMedia-canvas js-progressiveMedia-canvas\" width=\"42\" height=\"75\"><\/canvas><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d262ilb51hltx0.cloudfront.net\/max\/1200\/1*Yl2B32TZSQ5YACwJ0I4_2A.jpeg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/d262ilb51hltx0.cloudfront.net\/max\/1200\/1*Yl2B32TZSQ5YACwJ0I4_2A.jpeg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"imageCaption\">Sagar (My Coach\/PT)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 id=\"7708\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--figure\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Knowing I had let the problem drift beyond my steering capacity, it was time to seek help.<\/h4>\n<p id=\"55cb\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The world conspired and I found myself standing face-to-face with\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sagardiwanfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sagardiwanfw\" data- target=\"_blank\">Sagar<\/a> (my Coach\/PT).<\/p>\n<p id=\"0d25\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\">At first, Sagar ignored my offer reading my laid-back disposition for lack of motivation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"27b1\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Only after constant begging, pleading and requests did Sagar give me a chance, taking the helm of my wavering ship.<\/p>\n<p id=\"11cc\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">And you\u2019ll see why this detail is relevant in lesson four.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"78c8\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">What happened next can only be put in the realm of stratosphere shattering.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"661e\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4 graf--last\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2014<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Except we\u2019re talking about getting my ass handed to me and there\u2019s no sign of stratosphere or an inspiring visual of SpaceX rocket levitating into space, only balls and their shattering.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\" section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider layoutSingleColumn\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner layoutSingleColumn\">\n<p id=\"2ec8\" class=\"graf--p graf--leading graf--last\">&lt;<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\/shatteredballs.jpg image url missing<\/em>&gt;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\" section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider layoutSingleColumn\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner layoutSingleColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"6606\" class=\"graf--h3 graf--leading\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">\u21921. Embrace Shortcomings Not Shortcuts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"9233\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h3\">On day one, instead of lifting weights or having me crank into a Jean-Claud Van Damme epic splits <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10\" data- target=\"_blank\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(Watch clip)<\/strong><\/a>, Sagar put me through his \u201ctry-out\u201d routine.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1b38\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">By undergoing a series of tests aimed at understanding my physical limitations, strength, stamina, mobility, and pain points, Sagar, like a patient physics professor, calibrated to my state.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"0454\" class=\"graf--pullquote pullquote graf-after--p\"><p><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--pullquote-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--pullquote-em\">The trial reacquainted me with what being \u201cnormal\u201d should feel like.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"eace\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--pullquote\">Post initial assessment, we talked fitness goals, objectives, and the bigger picture. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Did I want to be a powerlifter, bodybuilder, athlete or just stay in shape?<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"0a22\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">With being fit and healthy on priority, in the absence of aesthetics, Sagar drew a roadmap for the year ahead geared towards my fitness goals. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">This programme entailed rebuilding from the ground up.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"758e\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\">Little had I known what Sagar had in mind.<\/h4>\n<p id=\"95a9\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\">We spent the first six months in the studio without ever touching a machine, working only on technique, form, breathing, posture and strengthening the core. Correct walking and running movements using the body\u2019s natural elastic were introduced. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Who knew?<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"1f99\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Throughout, there was focus on process and wellness as a way of life. And over time, conversations shifted from <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">rehabilitation<\/em> to <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">how can this became a way of life?<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"a514\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">We did it by reframing the role and place fitness should have in one\u2019s life, banishing an afterthought approach.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"75bb\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p graf--last\">I learned to look my weaknesses square in the eye and turn them into strengths. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Pull-ups anyone?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\" section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider layoutSingleColumn\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner layoutSingleColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"cf63\" class=\"graf--h3 graf--leading\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">\u21922. Show Up No Matter What<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"6044\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h3\">Each class would begin by Sagar conversing and gauging my mental state. Knowing my lack of discipline and inherit lazy nature, Sagar got inventive and reframed my goals.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f5b9\" class=\"graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u201cJust show up to the gym and leave the rest to me,\u201d or being the reassuring voice over my shoulder, \u201cdo your-today\u2019s-best\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"52f5\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Not realising, at the time, Sagar had disciplined me by breaking down a fitness mountain into a habit-inducing five-pound dumbbell.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"43a0\" class=\"graf--pullquote pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><p>\u201c80 percent of success is showing up\u201d\u2015Woody Allen<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"3f8c\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--pullquote\">I wouldn\u2019t be lying if I told you the first few months were tough and sometimes boring simply because I was performing repetitive movements, training muscle memory.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"14b6\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">I learned, the hard way, fitness isn\u2019t just lifting weights and sweating it out running aimlessly.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"889d\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\">By putting in the work and showing up <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">day by day<\/em> I had not only inched my way physically but become mentally stronger and habitual to the newfangled practice.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9353\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p graf--last\">In your face <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">fight-or-flight response<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\" section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider layoutSingleColumn\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner layoutSingleColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"fe52\" class=\"graf--h3 graf--leading\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">\u21923. Aim Higher But Celebrate Small Wins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"736d\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h3\">Without sounding like a squat rack, six months in, biomechanics, kinesthetics, mobility, nutrition, hydration, cross-functional, mobility and grunts became familiar sounds. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">As a rule of thumb, I refrain from speaking in mind-numbing fitness code.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"f12c\" class=\"graf--pullquote pullquote graf-after--p\"><p><em class=\"markup--em markup--pullquote-em\">How would \u201cJoey\u201d say this?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"2d03\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--pullquote\">Underpinned by wellness as the cause and effect we had gone from doing basic movements, correct warm up and cool down, single exercises to completing a circuit. Cardiovascular and overall muscular strength and stamina had seen tremendous progress. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Insert Zen-master proportions of epic patience here.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"9c37\" class=\"graf--h4 graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Finishing a workout for the first time was a big deal.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"eaeb\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\">On these rare occasions Sagar would pull out his notes and walk me through progress made, reaffirming my belief system by celebrating different stages on the progress bar.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"b4d5\" class=\"graf--pullquote pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p graf--last\"><p><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--pullquote-strong\">\u201cIt\u2019s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once the belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen\u201d<\/strong>\u2015Muhammed Ali<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\" section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider layoutSingleColumn\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner layoutSingleColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"c81e\" class=\"graf--h3 graf--leading\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">\u21924. Respect People\u2019s Time And Your Own<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"66cb\" class=\"graf--p graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--h3\">\u201cI don\u2019t get\/have time to workout\u201d or \u201cNext week is when I start\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m busy with work all day\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m asexual\u201d or \u201c(insert reason for not taking action here)\u201d and so on with the <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">time excuse<\/em> parade.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"2448\" class=\"graf--pullquote pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><p><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--pullquote-strong\">\u201cAction expresses priorities.\u201d<\/strong>\u2015Mahatma Gandhi<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"6d04\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--pullquote graf--last\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">If you don\u2019t respect your own time no-one else will.<\/em> Flake one too many times and find yourself chopped from Sagar\u2019s training calendar. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">He\u2019d do it without flinching irrespective of your bank balance, popularity or place in government.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\" section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider layoutSingleColumn\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner layoutSingleColumn\">\n<h4 id=\"90d5\" class=\"graf--h4 graf--leading\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h4-strong\">Let\u2019s take a moment and address the \u201cbusy\u201d right now.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"439e\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h4\">We\u2019re often caught up doing things we don\u2019t like, dropping a yes when it should be a steer-clear no or \u201cbusy\u201d exercising people-pleasing. Of the finite time we all have on earth, every second, minute and hour spent doing shit you don\u2019t want is a slice of what you could have been doing instead.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"78e0\" class=\"graf--pullquote pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><p>\u201cDon\u2019t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.\u201d\u2015John Wooden<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"8e20\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--pullquote graf--last\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Kissing that cute girl from yoga class at the party is what your night would have entailed had you not signed up for \u201cHow to Pet Your Lonely Cat\u201d the previous evening to help save your friend\u2019s depleting relationship with the cat lady. <\/em><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">You don\u2019t even have a cat.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\" section--body\">\n<div class=\"section-divider layoutSingleColumn\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<hr class=\"section-divider\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner layoutSingleColumn\">\n<h3 id=\"432e\" class=\"graf--h3 graf--leading\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">\u21925. Magic Happens Past Your Comfort Zone<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"8a8e\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h3\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/abstractsunday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/abstractsunday\" data- target=\"_blank\">Christoph Niemann<\/a> has the perfect analogy. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/130898948\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/130898948\" data- target=\"_blank\">You\u2019re trainer is interpreting an effortless workout for lack of trying.<\/a> That being said, as humans, we seek out paths of least resistance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ae6a\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Watching obscure Eastern European television depicting cats in dresses on failing to fetch the remote at arm\u2019s length ring a bell? Thinking too far ahead being the nagging cousin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"82aa\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The world of Product Design thrives on <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">lazy<\/em>. Designers dumb down the steps taken by a user to get the job done. <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Effortlessly push a Facebook or Twitter button on signup (*seen next on SQUAD) or buy something using Apple Pay or a Paypal checkout on Pornhub.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"f860\" class=\"graf--h3 graf-after--p\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">Coming back now.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote id=\"fcfb\" class=\"graf--pullquote pullquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--h3\"><p>\u201cIt is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried\u2026\u201d \u2015Theodore Roosevelt<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"9713\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--pullquote graf--last\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Pushing past your comfort zone has to be the most important lesson to come out of training. <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">The regret of not doing anything, for years, knowing my body craved the attention will always be motivation to keep pushing.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last month I crossed 500 days of training milestone, while raising my one rep deadlift max to an all-new 300lb.
